Business Conversations
Give yourself time to think about the business you want to build.
Seven facilitated small-group sessions exploring the questions that matter when starting or running a business, with practical preparation, useful discussion and space to apply what you learn.
Together, we will look at what you want your business to make possible, who you want to serve and the choices that can help it become sustainable.
Choose your preferred programme dates and register without payment. Once there is sufficient interest, I will invite you to book and pay. The cost is £599 for the complete online programme.
Is this for you?
Business Conversations is for aspiring and existing small-business owners who want to make thoughtful decisions about their businesses.
You might be considering self-employment, developing an idea alongside your current job or already trading and wondering what needs to change. You don’t need a finished business plan, and you don’t need to arrive with all the answers. You do need a willingness to reflect, contribute and consider other perspectives.
The programme will suit people who enjoy learning through conversation and applying ideas to their own circumstances. It offers a structured opportunity to step back from everyday tasks and give the business itself some attention.
When another approach may be more useful
If you need detailed advice on a specific legal, tax, financial or insolvency matter, you will need an appropriately qualified adviser. If you want someone to produce a business plan or marketing strategy for you, this programme does not provide that service.
For a sensitive personal situation or a decision needing sustained individual attention, coaching or mentoring may be a more suitable starting point. Both are available separately.

What could you take from it?
The aim is to help you develop a clearer sense of what you are building and why, together with practical next steps that make sense for your circumstances.
You will have opportunities to question assumptions, explore the numbers behind your plans and consider how potential customers come to know and trust you. Hearing other people’s questions can also help you recognise something you hadn’t yet considered in your own business.
There is no single model of success here. Your business may need to provide a full-time income, fit around other responsibilities or develop gradually alongside existing work. The conversations will help you think through those choices.
Where are you with your business?
What’s my why, and why does it matter?
Explore what draws you to business ownership and what you want it to make possible. Consider how your values, motivations and priorities can guide the decisions ahead.
The numbers that matter
Start with the life you want your business to support, then explore what it may need to generate. Consider the relationship between income, costs, pricing, capacity and the time you want to spend working.
Who do I want to serve?
Think about the people or organisations you would most like to work with, what matters to them and where your experience could be useful. Explore whether a particular focus would help you explain your offer and find suitable customers.
Finding customers
Consider how the right people might discover your business and begin a conversation with you. Explore practical ways to become visible, build relationships and choose activities you can sustain.
Building trust and credibility
Explore how people decide whether to buy from you. Consider how your communication, evidence, experience and customer interactions can help them understand your value and feel more confident about their decision.
Running a sustainable business
Look at the practical arrangements that help a business function well. Consider working routines, boundaries, systems and support, and identify what needs attention now and what can wait.
7Taking the next step
Bring your thinking together and choose what to act on. Identify a manageable set of priorities, consider what might get in the way and decide how you will review your progress.
How the programme works
The online programme comprises seven one-hour sessions in a small groups of 5-6 people, facilitated by me.
Before each session, you will receive Thinking Notes introducing the topic and some questions to consider. These help you connect the subject to your own circumstances before we meet.
During the session, we will explore the topic through discussion, questions and practical examples. I will bring relevant experience and guidance, while making room for participants to contribute and learn from one another.
Afterwards, reflection notes and an integrated workbook will help you develop your thinking and identify what you want to put into practice. A mid-series Q&A and a final Q&A provide additional opportunities to explore questions as they arise.
You won’t be expected to have polished answers. Thoughtful questions, uncertainty and ideas that are still taking shape are all welcome.

Mentoring
Mentoring brings practical experience and guidance into the conversation. We can examine your ideas, consider options and draw on lessons from starting, running and advising businesses.
This may suit you if you would welcome an experienced sounding board, constructive challenge and suggestions to help you decide what to do next.
We will agree the approach at the outset and be clear when a conversation moves between coaching and mentoring.
Individual or group support
Individual sessions provide focused time for your own circumstances, including matters you would prefer to discuss privately.
Group sessions offer the opportunity to explore shared challenges and learn from other business owners’ perspectives.
What does it cost?
Individual sessions are £200 per session, with a package of six sessions plus a discovery conversation for £999 plus VAT.
Group support is also planned. Please get in touch to discuss your interests and the options available.
Understanding the scope of our work
Coaching and mentoring can help you work through decisions and the personal pressures of business ownership. They do not replace therapy or specialist legal, financial or insolvency advice. Where your circumstances call for that expertise, it is important to involve an appropriately qualified professional.
Book an initial conversationYour facilitator
I’m Adrian Johnson. I bring more than 30 years of experience in business and professional practice, including starting, running and advising businesses.
I have experienced both the opportunities and the pressures that business ownership brings. Those experiences inform the questions I ask, the examples I share and the practical perspective I bring to these conversations.
My role is to help the group explore each subject meaningfully, make room for different perspectives and support you in deciding what is relevant to your own business.
